Three Months of Service!!

Hello to everyone in the US!

It’s hard to believe that I have already finished three months of service! I am still in my etude de milieu for another two months (which means no large projects), but it this coming month I will be able to conduct some activities with my association to assess their wants and needs. It should be fun, especially now that I am becoming more familiar with Moore, the local language here. The women in my association all love teaching me Moore – I have over 20 teachers!! It is really interesting as well, since I am learning to speak Moore as they are receiving lessons in how to read and write it, so we are all growing together! My association is also a center of women’s education, in addition to their making shea butter.

My village is really quite beautiful. In the main village center, there is a busier, more “city” feel, while several kilometers away where my house is there is a very rustic and quiet feeling. It’s the best of both worlds, honestly.

The internet here, which is actually based out of a center for youth development, education, and empowerment, is relatively fast, so I am available to video skype from time to time, if anyone would like (skype from computer to computer is free). If anyone would like to skype, just send me an email at so we can set up a time a few days ahead of time. I am available to skype from 7:00 AM – 10:30 AM for New Mexicans. Anytime after that and it’s dark here, and I try to get home before dark, because riding a bike in the dark is hard! For Californian folks, 6-9:30AM. Also, the internet is finally fast enough so that I can actually label the photos I have been posting, so they won’t just be random photos of odd things! There will eventually be subtitles for all of the photos.

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful 2011 so far, and that this coming year is filled with good things and many successes! I miss all of you lots, and hope to see everyone very soon!

Until next time,
